Really? You can't get this right?
The sound man did not help this as he would turn her down to inaudible, or so loud it was obviously annoying. Last nights’ Phantom was the understudy, very well done. I have seen Phantom with Michael Crawford at Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, and many years in the past at Gammage and other venues. Christine, toooo much vibrato, sorry.
The performance was a little better than some local performances that I have seen in the Valley. The orchestra, chorus, sets, staging, effects, dance, choreography, lighting still amazing.
The Sound TECHNICALLY SUCKS. Microphones not turned on, not turned up, mic’s left on, a lot of BUMPS IN THE NIGHT. Stage hands seen, or moving material, even dropping items (one instance noticed by all of us, the curtain that is drawn in the last act, as the Che appears and has already murdered the person on the bed), this and many other “opps” broke the 4th wall, I was constantly reminded that this was at a show and not able to escape into the story and fantasy of what should be Che of the Opera”.
I took a friend who had never seen this, and a friend who has seen it more times than I. We all said at the same times when the lights went up at intermission, the sound sucks. I understand that is an inherent problem with Gammage, but the Orchestra was drowning out the vocals makes it seem as though someone paying attention on the sound board should have compensated. From the beginning they might as well had the “auctioneers” microphone off, Raul, and Madam Giry were not audible during the auction either, it was not ambience, it was obnoxious.
For those who have been to to this venue before know it does depend where you sit. As it sounds I was under the balcony, or upper wall level, this was not the case, we were 11th row center. I blame this a lot on the fact that I went to a Thursday night performance. however, the price of tickets that should not matter.
I am not sure anyone will really read this, it is refreshing to be able to post some thing like this just to release the frustration of saying to everyone, we should have to Vegas!
